What 𑌭 means
It represents Sanskrit’s voiced, aspirated bha consonant.
Say it with your voice on: make a b sound, then release it with a clear breath. Grantha is an Indian syllabic script, so a bare consonant normally includes a short a sound (its inherent vowel). A vowel sign changes that vowel; a virama, the mark that cancels it, lets the consonant join another consonant.
Forms that led to Grantha are attested in inscriptions from the 4th century CE, including records of early Pallava kings, who ruled parts of present-day northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh. The modern script took shape after the 13th century CE. Grantha later appeared in Sanskrit portions of Manipravalam, a mixed Tamil-Sanskrit language, and in manuscripts of the Vedas, Hindu sacred texts. As of 2024, Grantha remains in daily use among Vedic scholars and Hindu temple priests.
Why does 𑌭 look blank in Word?
A font without Grantha support is the likeliest cause.
As of 2026, Microsoft Word may select a font without Grantha letter forms. Choose a font that supports Grantha, such as Noto Sans Grantha. The keyboard controls which character is entered; the font controls whether it appears.
Specialist and script-specific: it points to Grantha writing, chiefly for Sanskrit.

It can indicate the sound with a raised digit, but Tamil script has no separate bha consonant; Grantha lets writers preserve that Sanskrit distinction directly.
