What ੲ means
It is a base for writing certain independent vowels.
Gurmukhi uses ੲ as the base for ਇ, ਈ and ਏ; the other carriers, ੳ and ਅ, serve different vowel groups. These finished letters represent Punjabi vowels that stand alone, so ordinary text uses them instead of a bare carrier plus a mark.
If ੲ plus a vowel sign shows a dotted circle, changes with the font, or fails to match in search, use the finished letter. The decomposed carrier-plus-mark sequence is the risky form.
Is ੲ older than Unicode?
Yes as a script form; Unicode encoded it later. The exact first appearance of ੲ is unsettled. Accounts place recognizable early Gurmukhi forms in regional Sharada/Devasesha writing traditions by the fourteenth century; comparative work also proposes influence from Landa, merchant writing styles. This describes a script that evolved, not a single inventor.
The carrier system served a practical purpose: a small set of bases plus vowel signs could write Punjabi vowels that stand alone. In the sixteenth century, Sikh standardization made vowel marking obligatory; Sikh Gurus used the script for Sikh scripture and Punjabi writing.
As of 2026, Punjabi in Pakistan follows the Shahmukhi tradition, while Gurmukhi is also used for Punjabi and Sikh scripture. Iri has a structural role within Gurmukhi.
Technical and educational: ੲ marks Gurmukhi vowel structure rather than acting as a standalone conversational symbol.
Do not read bare ੲ as “i”; it is a carrier, not the finished vowel.

1Why does ੲ plus a vowel mark show a dotted circle?
Use the finished vowel letter. A decomposed carrier-plus-mark sequence can show a dotted circle, display differently by font, or fail search matching.
