Gurmukhi Tippi

74/80

Tippi ੰ is a Punjabi nasal mark: it signals a vowel spoken through the nose or a nasal consonant such as n or m. In some words, it also marks a doubled nasal consonant. You enter it after a letter, although the font displays it above the syllable.

Text symbol

What ੰ means

It marks a nasal vowel or a nasal consonant. The tippi mark helps spell Punjabi sounds in Gurmukhi, a writing system used for Punjabi. In ਕੰਮ, meaning “work,” it marks a doubled m; ਸੰਗ and ਸਿੰਘ show its use before another consonant.

The vowel determines whether you use tippi or bindi. Tippi accompanies short a and i vowels, and short or long u signs attached to consonants; bindi serves the other vowel contexts. In older texts, their distribution can differ.

Tippi belongs to an evolving writing tradition

Gurmukhi developed from the Brahmi family of Indian writing systems. Early Gurmukhi forms are illustrated from the 13th century; one account places a regional form of Sharada, an older script, on the path to Gurmukhi in the 14th century. Landa and Takri, other regional scripts, also figure in accounts of its development.

Guru Angad, the second Sikh spiritual leader, standardized Gurmukhi rather than inventing it from scratch. Tippi represents nasal sounds in Punjabi spelling. Punjabi is also written in Shahmukhi, a separate writing system based on Arabic letters.

How do I type tippi without breaking the word?

Type the letter, any vowel sign, then tippi. For example, ਕ ੰ becomes ਕੰ. Text order stays after the letter; the font handles its position. Without a valid base letter, the mark may appear on a dotted circle or as a missing glyph.

A spelling mark whose sound depends on the Punjabi syllable it accompanies.

Tippi and bindi follow spelling rules; shape alone cannot tell you which to use.

Questions people ask

1

Why does tippi look like bindi?

It can be a font substitution. A Gurmukhi font may draw bindi’s dot when tippi occurs with a vowel normally taking bindi. The underlying text can still contain tippi.
