The Khema digit records four; it is not spoken.
A 2014 study in Ghandruk, Kaski, gives pli as the spoken Gurung word for four in one list from Lamjung district, Nepal. It records calculations grouped by tens and by twenties among local participants.
Why was Gurung Khema developed?
To give Gurung a written form for preservation and teaching.
The idea is credited to priest Pim Bahadur Gurung around 1973/74; in 1977, a committee asked Bal Narsingh Gurung to develop the script. It entered community use in 1995. A 2003 book shows the digits; the script was also revised in 2019.
Gurung Khema is a Brahmi-based abugida: consonants carry an inherent vowel. Khe Prih, created for Gurung by Jagan Lal Gurung in 1944, is a separate, older script.

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
