Why was Gurung Khema developed?
To write Gurung and preserve oral ritual teachings. Jagan Lal Gurung created Khe Prih, a separate script for Gurung, in 1944. Bal Narsingh Gurung began developing Gurung Khema in 1977 to preserve pye, ritual teachings passed from teacher to student; it was presented in 1995. The name joins khe and ma, terms for male and female ancestors. Long-vowel spellings expanded in 2019.
