What エ means
It has the same e reading as エ. エ is the halfwidth compatibility form of エ: the shape is narrower, but the kana reading stays the same.
JIS X 0201, standardized in 1969, included a limited katakana set for computer systems with restricted character repertoires. JIS X 0208 and Shift JIS later connected that set with broader Japanese text. The halfwidth display became a familiar convention in fixed-width systems, and Unicode keeps the distinction for compatibility.
The character’s role depends on the field. A 2019 Zengin-Net update listed halfwidth katakana for bank transfer names and branch names. Japanese university email guidance warns that receiving environments may garble or display halfwidth kana differently. In ordinary Japanese prose, use エ unless a field asks for halfwidth.
A legacy-format choice, not a tone marker.
As of 2026, avoid using halfwidth kana for style in email: receiving environments may garble or display them differently.

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
Codes and encoding1 code points
A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
