hangul syllable baelt

Hangul syllable baelt

4158/11172

밽 is one Hangul syllable, formed from ᄇ (initial), ᅢ (vowel), and ᆴ (final cluster). A lone syllable has no surrounding word to settle its meaning. A Korean IME types it by joining ㅂ, ㅐ, ㄹ, ㅌ.

What 밽 means

It is a Korean syllable; read it with a word for meaning. Its Hangul Jamo—the individual letters—are ᄇ (initial), ᅢ (vowel), and ᆴ (the final ㄹㅌ cluster). The block shows how the syllable is assembled; the Korean word around it tells you what that word means.

In a word, the final ㄹㅌ cluster can interact with the next syllable's opening sound. Read the whole word to follow its pronunciation.

Why does Hangul use syllable blocks?

Each block groups Korean sounds into one visible syllable. The first recorded notice of Hangul is in a 1443 entry in the Annals of King Sejong. Hunminjeongeum, a book explaining Hangul's letters and design, was published in 1446. Hangul represented Korean speech with letters arranged into syllable blocks.

Korean writing also used Hanja, the Chinese characters used in Korean texts. Over time, Hangul became the main script for Korean. By 1914, reformers had proposed writing the letters in horizontal rows because arranging blocks for mechanical printing was difficult; the block format endured.

How to type 밽

A Korean IME composes it from ㅂ, ㅐ, ㄹ, then ㅌ. Enter those keyboard letters in order in a Korean input method (IME); it combines ㄹㅌ into the final cluster. If the editor leaves the letters separate, they have not been composed into the single block.

Unicode text normalization can store this syllable in two equivalent forms: NFC composes the Jamo as 밽, while NFD decomposes it as 밽. Software can render both as the same syllable even though one is a single block character and the other is three Jamo.

Neutral in Korean text; alone in a message, it reads as an isolated syllable.

Why does 밽 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
