What 뻘 means
It means coastal mud in regional Korean. In southern Korean dialects, it names 개흙, dark mud on a shore or marsh. For neutral or formal writing, 갯벌, 개펄, 펄, or 개흙 is safer; 뻘 sounds regional.
Hangul forms syllable blocks by arranging consonant and vowel letters: 뻘 contains ㅃ, ㅓ, and the final consonant ㄹ. Hangul's first documentary record dates to 1443, and its explanatory book was published in 1446.
What does 뻘- mean online?
It makes the next word sound pointless or unserious. Online, 뻘짓 is a futile or silly effort, and 뻘글 is low-content writing; both can be self-mocking or dismissive. A creator-community glossary in 2023 used 뻘트 for a meaningless tweet. The whole word sets the reading: these compounds are not about mud.
Literal use is regional; online compounds can sound blunt, self-mocking, or dismissive.
For neutral formal Korean, use 갯벌 or 개흙.

1Why does 뻘 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
