What 뻠 means
뻠 is a Korean syllable, not a fixed message. One documented regional use names a handspan measure, or an object or fish about that long.
A 2024 pronunciation entry uses 뻠 to show the sound of 범 in the Korean word 잡범, though the written word keeps 범.
How did Hangul become a block script?
Hangul letters combine into one block for each syllable. The script was made to represent Korean speech. Its design was completed in 1443, and a written guide to the new alphabet was issued in 1446.
Hangul took shape in a Korean writing culture already familiar with Chinese characters. The Phags-pa script, based on Tibetan, also arranges signs in syllable blocks; that parallel is not evidence that Phags-pa was Hangul's ancestor.
Use it only when the word is clear
If it arrives alone, treat it as an incomplete clue. It could point to the regional vocabulary use or to a pronunciation note; ask for the Korean word or source that supplies the context.
Regional word or pronunciation notation; its meaning depends on the Korean word or source.
Do not replace 범 with 뻠 in 잡범 just because a pronunciation note uses 뻠 for its sound.
