Hangul Syllable Bbyil

5245/11172

The meaning of 쁼 depends on the Korean word around it: alone, this Hangul syllable block has no fixed word meaning. It combines ㅃ, ㅢ, and ㄹ; a bare message containing it does not tell you what emotion the sender intended.

What 쁼 means

It is one Korean syllable; the word around it supplies its meaning.

Hangul, the Korean writing system, groups letters into blocks, usually one syllable per block. 쁼 combines initial consonant ㅃ, vowel ㅢ, and final consonant ㄹ. Unicode’s label “bbyil” names this block from its sound components; it is not an English translation.

Hangul, the alphabet whose letters form this block, was announced in 1443; an explanatory book called Hunminjeongeum followed in 1446. It was designed to write Korean more directly than older methods that used Chinese characters for Korean—idu, gugyeol, and hyangchal—and to be easier to learn. Buddhist books and personal letters show it in everyday writing. A 1933 spelling plan standardized the modern framework. South Korea commonly calls the script Hangul; North Korea commonly calls it Chosŏn’gŭl.

How do I type 쁼?

On a Korean Dubeolsik layout, use ShiftQ, M, L, then F.

Switch your input method to Korean. ShiftQ enters ㅃ, M then L forms ㅢ, and F adds final ㄹ; the input method composes them as 쁼. Other Korean keyboard layouts use different keys.

Why does 쁼 look different across fonts?

Fonts can shift the letters inside the block without changing its identity.

Unicode fixes the component order; each font chooses their precise placement, shape, and size. One typeface may make the vowel arrangement easier to see than another, but the text still represents 쁼.

In Korean, it is neutral written text; alone outside a Korean word, it is hard to interpret.

Don't read emotion into a lone 쁼; its syllable alone doesn't explain why it was sent.

Why is 쁼 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
