What 버 means
Press ㅂ followed by ㅓ in Korean input.
On a 두벌식 QWERTY layout, ㅂ is Q and ㅓ is J. The IME composes the keystrokes into one syllable block; ㅂㅓ is the decomposed sequence, not a different pronunciation.
Unicode can store the same syllable as a composed block or as decomposed jamo. Normalization changes the stored sequence, while a Korean-capable font draws the block.
What does 버 mean in Korean?
It has no fixed English meaning outside a word.
The Korean Basic Dictionary shows 버스 (“bus”), 버섯 (“mushroom”), and 버리다 (“throw away”). In -어 버리다, it can mark the preceding action as completed.
A documented regional split changes the surrounding spelling: South Korean 버스 and North Korean 뻐스 both mean “bus.” That makes 버 a word component, not a universal shorthand for the vehicle.
Where does this syllable come from?
Its history follows Hangul, not a separate 버 symbol.
Hangul was completed in 1443 and promulgated with explanations in 1446 to make Korean writing accessible. Before it, Idu, Hyangchal, and Gugyeol used Chinese characters to transcribe Korean; they are related predecessors to the writing problem Hangul addressed, not visual ancestors of 버.
As of 2026, this research found no defensible evidence that isolated 버 had its own cross-cultural meaning. Its meanings come from Korean words and grammar.
