What 뵈 means
On its own, 뵈 is one Korean syllable, not a complete word. Hangul builds syllable blocks from letter parts: ㅂ plus ㅚ forms 뵈.
뵈다 is a respectful verb related to 보다, the ordinary Korean verb for seeing. 뵙다 is more deferential. These forms show respect to the person you see or meet, usually someone you address formally; the respect is directed at that person, not the speaker’s mood.
A form containing 뵈 appears in the 1447 Korean song text 용비어천가. Hangul was created as an alphabet for writing Korean, so the language could be written directly rather than relying solely on Chinese characters.
Why do 뵈다, 봬요, and 뵙다 differ?
They are forms of the same respectful verb. The ending changes the form: 뵈어요 contracts to 봬요; before endings such as -고 and -겠습니다, the more deferential stem 뵙- appears, as in 뵙고 and 뵙겠습니다. That is why the polite “see you” form is 봬요, not 뵈요.
In Middle Korean, ㅚ was a falling diphthong: a vowel glide that starts with its more prominent sound. Its pronunciation shifted over time. Modern speakers may pronounce it as one vowel or as a glide; the spelling stays the same.
뵈다 and 뵙다 show deference to the person being seen; they sound respectful, not casual.
With a friend, 만나다 is the ordinary choice; 뵈다 gives extra deference.

1Why does 뵈 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
