hangul syllable caet

Hangul Syllable Chaet

챝 is one Korean syllable; its meaning comes from the Korean word around it. Read it roughly like “chet,” with a short, unreleased final t; Korean keyboard software, or an IME (input method editor), combines ㅊ, ㅐ, and ㅌ into this block.

What 챝 means

It marks one spoken syllable in a Korean word. Its initial ㅊ, vowel ㅐ, and final ㅌ are arranged together in one Hangul block; the surrounding word gives that syllable its meaning.

Hangul can be stored as precomposed syllable blocks or in decomposed forms. NFD (canonical decomposition) expands 챝 into conjoining jamo—the forms that fit together in a syllable block—as 챝. The similar-looking sequence ㅊㅐㅌ uses compatibility jamo; NFKC (compatibility normalization) can normalize it to 챝. The text sequences are distinct.

Hangul was created under King Sejong in 1443 because Korean speech differed from Chinese writing, making Chinese characters—called Hanja in Korean texts—hard for many people to use for Korean. The explanatory book 훈민정음 (“Correct Sounds for the Instruction of the People”) was published in 1446. Early Hangeul books included Buddhist texts. The 1894 Gabo Reform gave Hangeul official standing in public documents; the name “Hangeul” appears in 1910s records and was widely used by 1928. Some scholars propose that the Phags-pa alphabet, developed for the Mongol Yuan court, influenced its design; the link remains debated.

Is “CAET” the Korean romanization?

No. CAET is Unicode’s algorithmic syllable label, assembled from the short names of its parts. Korean Revised Romanization writes the spoken syllable as “chaet.”
