hangul syllable cung

Hangul Syllable Cung

충 has no fixed meaning on its own: the Korean word around it determines which root it belongs to. It appears in words for shock (충격), charging (충전), and faithfulness (충실); internet slang ending in -충 can compare a person to a bug and sound insulting. The syllable block joins three Hangul letters: ㅊ, ㅜ, and ㅇ.

What 충 means

It has no single fixed meaning by itself.

The surrounding word decides the reading: 충격 is impact or shock, 충전 is charging, and 충실 can mean fullness or faithfulness. The same Hangul syllable spelling appears in unrelated roots, so the word around it matters.

Hangul's syllable-block system was created in 1443; the Hunminjeongeum, a publication explaining it, appeared in 1446. After 1446, Hangul appeared in Buddhist and Confucian translations, practical manuals, and literature. The system made Korean easier to write for people who had not learned Chinese characters.

Is 충 Korean slang for bug?

Only when it is the suffix -충.

In Korean internet and social-media slang, writers attach -충 to labels for people or behavior. Readers who know the slang hear the bug comparison as contempt; a bare 충 elsewhere has no fixed insult sense. A 2018 study described the pattern as a way to express anger or hostility; examples include 맘충, 급식충, and 설명충.

If someone sends you a word ending in -충, read the target and the insult separately: the first part names who or what is being criticized, and the ending adds contempt. Avoid using it for a friend, coworker, or group unless you are deliberately quoting the insult.

Why does 충 mean different things in Korean words?

Different roots share this one syllable spelling.

Unicode represents the syllable as ᄎ + ᅮ + ᆼ: an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant. Korean keyboard input commonly uses the compatible forms ㅊ + ㅜ + ㅇ. If an input tool exposes the components separately, that is a spelling representation, not a new meaning.

Neutral inside ordinary words; insulting when -충 labels a person or group.

When -충 labels people, read it as an insult.

Why does 충 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
