What 첔 means
It is one syllable, written as a block.
Hangul places a syllable's first consonant, vowel, and optional final consonant in one block. As of 2026, 첔 has no established standalone Korean dictionary meaning: it combines ㅊ at the start, vowel ㅒ, and final ㅋ, but that structure does not create a word by itself.
Hangul's earliest documentary trail reaches December 1443, when a royal record credits King Sejong with creating the new alphabet. Hunminjeongeum, the guide explaining the script, was completed in 1446. It gave Korean speech a writing system intended to be easier to learn than the Chinese-character writing then in use; this is Hangul's history, not a backstory unique to 첔.
Why is 첔 a valid character?
Hangul uses a regular system for building syllable blocks.
This Hangul jamo sequence—the separate Korean letters—is Unicode's standard decomposed form of 첔: 첔. The letters occupy the initial, medial, and final positions and correspond to ㅊ, ㅒ, and ㅋ. Hangul's syllable inventory includes permitted combinations even when a combination has no established dictionary word.
A Korean IME, an input method that assembles syllables, combines ㅊ, then ㅒ, then ㅋ into the precomposed block. Text may instead contain the equivalent separate jamo; Unicode NFC normalization can combine them, while a font may space the separate letters differently.
Neutral as written Hangul; the surrounding text supplies its role.
A valid syllable block is not automatically a word.

Questions people ask
1Why does 첔 break into separate jamo?
It can. 첔 and 첔 are equivalent Unicode forms, so normalization can convert between them. Fonts may place the separate letters with different spacing.
