Hangul syllable 똸

2617/11172

똸 is a Hangul syllable block built from three jamo: ㄸ, ㅘ, and ㄽ. Those parts describe one Korean syllable; by themselves, they do not spell a word with its own translation. A Dubeolsik Korean keyboard input method can assemble the block from its component keys.

What 똸 means

It is a Korean syllable block, not a word with its own translation.

똸 combines the tense initial consonant ㄸ, the vowel ㅘ, and the final consonant cluster ㄽ (ㄹ ㅅ). In Hangul, these component letters are called jamo; together they form one syllable, but they do not add separate meanings you can translate.

Hangul appears in records from 1443; a 1446 book explained the script. Its purpose was to make Korean reading and writing accessible. Historians also discuss its use for recording Korean pronunciation and as an alternative to Chinese characters used in Korean texts. Older spellings and dialect transcriptions could use forms that the 1933 standard left outside ordinary modern spelling. The square block is Hangul's way of arranging letters into a syllable; its letters belong to Hangul, not Hanja, the Chinese-character tradition used in Korean writing.

How to type 똸?

A Korean 2-set keyboard input method joins five keystrokes.

With Dubeolsik (the common Korean 2-set keyboard layout), switch to Korean input and press ShiftE, H, K, F, T. The input method combines them into ㄸ ㅘ ㄽ and displays one Hangul syllable block.

Those key names refer to an English-layout keyboard used with that input method. If the syllable displays as separate letters, compatibility jamo are spacing characters that do not join automatically; conjoining jamo need Hangul shaping support from the font and text engine. The precomposed character 똸 is already one block.

Neutral in a Hangul spelling context; outside Korean text, it reads like a technical character rather than a reaction.

Alone, it will not reliably land as a joke or emotion.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 똸 break into separate letters?

That is a shaping issue, not a different syllable. Compatibility jamo are separate spacing characters; conjoining jamo form a block only when the font and text engine support Hangul shaping. The precomposed character 똸 is one syllable block.
