What 띄 means
On a 2-set Dubeolsik keyboard, Shift+E gives ㄸ; M and L give ㅢ. Korean input combines those letters into 띄.
Korean input mode must be active. If the keys produce Latin letters, switch your device's input mode to Korean; the input method then forms the Hangul block.
What does 띄 mean in Korean?
Its meaning depends on the Korean word around it. As a shortened form of 뜨이다, 띄 appears in 눈에 띄다, meaning that something is visible or stands out, and 귀가 번쩍 띄다, when unexpected news suddenly sparks interest.
띄다 is also a shortened form of 띄우다, meaning to leave or widen a gap. It appears in 띄워 놓다 and 띄어쓰기, the Korean term for spacing between words.
Where does 띄 come from?
띄 belongs to Hangul, the Korean writing system, rather than being a standalone emblem. Hangul was created in 1443, and the Hunminjeongeum, a book explaining the new writing system, was published in 1446 to make reading and writing more accessible, including for practical texts such as laws and instructions.
Unicode represents 띄 as the two Hangul letters ᄄ and ᅴ. The combined block and this two-letter sequence are canonically equivalent: the letters form the same syllable, not a separate symbol with an older meaning.
As a syllable, it is neutral; the Korean word around it supplies the meaning and tone.
Do not substitute 띠: 띠다 is a different verb, meaning wear, carry, or have a quality.

Unicode treats them as canonically equivalent: 띄 is the two-letter decomposition of 띄. A Korean input method may show the letters before combining them.
