Hangul syllable 덝

1886/11172

덝 is a Hangul syllable block; its meaning comes from the Korean word it belongs to. It combines ㄷ, ㅓ, and final ㄺ; a Korean IME forms it by taking ㄷ, ㅓ, ㄹ, then ㄱ in one sequence.

What 덝 means

Its meaning comes from the Korean word around it.

The block is made from ㄷ, ㅓ, and final ㄺ. In Hangul, ㄺ is a final consonant cluster called batchim, the consonant or cluster at the bottom of a syllable block. Its romanized spelling is “deolg”; the surrounding Korean word determines how it is read. Unicode normalization can also represent the same syllable as separate jamo—the letters that build Hangul blocks—so text tools may expose its parts.

Hangul was designed to write Korean speech, which Chinese writing did not represent directly. Its first record under the name Hunminjeongeum is dated 1443; an explanatory handbook appeared in 1446. Hangul later coexisted with Hanja, Chinese characters used in Korean texts. In early to mid-twentieth century, reformers tested linear layouts for machine writing, but syllable blocks remained standard.

Neutral in Korean writing; it is text rather than an emoji reaction.

Alone in a message, it can look like a stray or mistyped Korean syllable.

Why is 덝 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
