What 돣 means
On a Korean 2-set keyboard, enter ehkrt with Hangul input enabled.
The two-set layout groups consonant and vowel keys separately. The keystrokes enter ㄷ, ㅗ, ㅏ, ㄱ, ㅅ; the input method combines them into 돣. The middle pair makes ㅘ, and the final pair forms ᆪ (ㄳ).

Why was Hangul created?
It offered an alphabet designed to write Korean directly.
Before Hangul, Korean writers adapted Chinese characters to write Korean through systems called Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal. King Sejong introduced the new script under the name Hunminjeongeum (“Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People”); the royal chronicle Sejong Sillok records its creation in 1443. An explanatory book followed in 1446, setting out its purpose and principles. The script later became known as Hangul.

1Why does 돣 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
