Hangul syllable Dwan

2021/11172

돤 is a Korean Hangul syllable block built from ㄷ, ㅘ, and ㄴ; it has no fixed meaning by itself. Read roughly “dwan,” it contributes a syllable’s sound inside a Korean word or name. The same block can also represent a Mandarin syllable in Korean transcription.

What 돤 means

It is a Hangul syllable, not a sign with one fixed meaning.

Read roughly “dwan”: ㄷ gives the starting consonant, ㅘ the vowel, and ㄴ the ending consonant. It contributes a syllable’s sound inside a Korean word or name; the rest of the spelling gives the meaning.

Hangul was created to write Korean speech. Its creation was recorded in 1443, and the explanatory guide Hunminjeongeum was published in 1446. The system joins Korean letters into syllable blocks and was designed around Korean rather than Chinese writing.

Why does 돤 represent a Mandarin syllable?

It is a Korean spelling for a sound, not a Korean definition. As of 2026, a National Institute of Korean Language table maps the Mandarin syllable written duan in pinyin (roughly “twan”) to 돤. In the 1448 Dongguk Jeongun, a Korean pronunciation guide for Chinese characters, 돤 appears as a pronunciation value for characters including 端 and 斷. The block records pronunciation; the surrounding text supplies meaning.

Hangul letters, called jamo, combine to form the block: ㄷ, ㅘ, and ㄴ make 돤. The vowel ㅘ itself combines ㅗ and ㅏ. Unicode text can represent the syllable as one precomposed block or as its separate letters; normalization can convert between these equivalent forms.

Neutral written text: it marks a syllable or transcription choice, not a mood on its own.

By itself, 돤 does not settle a word or message; read the surrounding text or ask the sender.

1

Why does 돤 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
