Hangul Syllable Dwalt

2030/11172

What 돭 means

It is a syllable in Korean writing; context supplies its word meaning.

Hangul groups its letters into syllable blocks, and Korean words are written by lining those blocks up. Unicode’s name “dwalt” is assembled from the romanized labels for ㄷ, ㅘ, and ㄾ; it describes the block’s parts, not a word.

King Sejong created Hangul in 1443, and a 1446 book, Hunminjeongeum, explained the new script’s purpose and principles. Korean writing had often relied on Chinese characters; systems such as Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal adapted them to represent Korean. The easier-to-learn Hangul script appeared in Buddhist scriptures, later Confucian works, everyday labels, and practical books. It became the official national writing system in 1894; after Japan annexed Korea in 1910, it lost that status. These are milestones in Hangul’s history, not a special meaning of 돭.

Why does 돭 split into Jamo?

It is stored either as one block or as separate Jamo.

Jamo are the consonant and vowel letters that build Hangul syllables. Unicode’s decomposed form (NFD) stores 돭 as ᄃ ᅪ ᆴ: an initial consonant, vowel, and final consonant cluster. Its composed form (NFC) joins the three Jamo as 돭 again.

A Korean input method may show the Jamo while the syllable is being composed. In finished text, separated Jamo can also mean the app or font did not shape the sequence into a joined syllable.

Why does 돭 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
