Hangul Syllable 돦

2023/11172

With Korean input active, enter ㄷㅗㅏㄴㅎ; a Korean IME assembles those letters into 돦. This Hangul block represents one written Korean syllable, whose meaning depends on its word. Hangul began in the 15th century; this character’s Unicode encoding came much later.

What 돦 means

In Korean input mode, type ㄷㅗㅏㄴㅎ.

An input method editor (IME) on a Korean keyboard combines those keys into one block. Unicode decomposes 돦 into ᄃ (initial consonant), ᅪ (vowel) and ᆭ (final consonant cluster). These basic Hangul letter components are called jamo.

What does 돦 mean?

It marks a syllable; the glyph alone does not give you a message.

It represents one written Korean syllable. Read it within a Korean word to understand its role and meaning.

Why was Hangul created?

To make Korean easier to write without first learning Chinese characters.

The Sejong Annals, a chronicle of King Sejong’s reign, records Hangul’s creation in 1443. The Hunminjeongeum, a book explaining the script, was published in 1446. Earlier methods called Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters to write Korean. Hangul gave people who had not learned Chinese characters an easier way to write Korean speech.

Printed use shifted from Buddhist texts to Confucian classics, then practical guides and laws after the late 16th century. Hangul became Korea’s official national writing system in 1894, then lost that status under Japanese rule in 1910. Early labels included Jeongeum and Eonmun (“vernacular writing”); Gukmun (“national writing”) became common after 1894, and Hangeul spread as the script’s name by 1928.

Questions people ask

2

Can Unicode store a Hangul syllable as a jamo sequence?

Yes. Unicode can represent the same syllable as one precomposed character or as a sequence of its jamo, the component letters. The sequence is intended to display as the same block, though software comparing raw characters can distinguish the stored forms.

Why might 돦 look different in different fonts?

It can. Fonts and text software can draw the parts of a Hangul block with different shapes or proportions while the encoded character stays the same.
