Korean Hangul syllable 됼

2109/11172

됼 is one syllable block in Hangul, the Korean writing system, built from ㄷ, ㅛ, and ㄹ. It contributes a syllable to a Korean word; on its own, it usually needs the surrounding word for its full meaning. A Korean input method assembles those letters as you type, and fonts may draw the block's parts differently.

What 됼 means

됼 is a Hangul syllable block, not a complete word by itself. It combines ㄷ as its initial consonant, ㅛ as its vowel, and ㄹ as its final consonant. Hangul arranges those letters together in one block for a syllable; the surrounding Korean word supplies the fuller meaning.

Hangul was designed to write Korean speech with alphabetic letters arranged in syllable blocks. Its earliest written record dates to 1443; an explanatory book introducing the script was published in 1446. A Hangul block may resemble Hanja, Chinese characters also used in Korean writing, but Hangul blocks are assembled from letters.

After 1894, the script was commonly called gukmun (national writing) or gukseo (national script). The name Hangeul appeared in the early 1910s and was widespread by 1928.

How do I type 됼 with a Korean keyboard?

Enter ㄷ, then ㅛ, then ㄹ in a Korean input method. This software, often called an IME, combines the letters into a Hangul syllable as you type. On a QWERTY Dubeolsik layout, a common two-set Korean keyboard, use the e, y, and f keys in that order.

Unicode can represent the same syllable as one block or as the sequence 됼 of separate Hangul letters. Both forms represent the same text. Fonts can vary in the placement, shape, and size of the parts.

Neutral as Hangul text; the surrounding Korean word supplies its meaning.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 됼 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
