What 에 means
Usually a noun particle for place, time, or destination; alone, an interjection.
It follows a noun and can mark place, time, destination, target, cause, purpose, or addition; context determines its role.
Hangul was developed and promulgated in 1443 and 1446, respectively, to make Korean writing accessible. Middle Korean (an older form of Korean) texts from 1447 and 1459 record related location particles. Their Latin-letter forms, ay/ey, followed vowel harmony: vowels in a word influence one another.
With a noun, neutral grammar; alone, conversational.
A bare 에 is not automatically “no.”

1Why does 에 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
