What 읁 means
It writes a Korean syllable, not a complete message. The block combines ㅇ (a silent starting letter), ㅡ (the vowel), and ㄵ (two consonant letters joined at the end). “Eunj” labels these parts rather than translating the block. When 읁 appears alone, surrounding text can show its role.
Hangul groups letters into square syllable blocks. The script was created in 1443 and introduced in a 1446 guide to make Korean easier to learn. Some Joseon-era officials who favored Chinese writing resisted Hangul before it became common in daily use. A possible influence from Phags-pa, a script associated with the Mongol Empire, remains debated.

Questions people ask
1Why does 읁 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
