What 겕 means
Use a Korean Hangul IME (input method) and enter ㄱ, ㅔ, ㄹ, then ㄱ.
The first three jamo, Hangul's consonant and vowel letters, form 겔; the last ㄱ combines with the final ㄹ to make the compound final ㄺ.
What does 겕 mean by itself?
By itself, it names a syllable block, not a complete message.
Hangul groups consonant and vowel letters into blocks, with an optional final consonant. Here the initial is ㄱ, the vowel is ㅔ, and the compound final ㄺ occupies the batchim, or ending-consonant position. The word-level meaning comes from the Korean word or name around it.
Hangul was created in 1443 and introduced in 1446 through Hunminjeongeum, a text explaining its purpose and design. It offered a way to write Korean without relying on Chinese-character literacy; earlier practices such as Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters to Korean. That history belongs to the writing system, not this individual block.
Why does Unicode show 겕 as 겕?
Hangul packs jamo into square syllable blocks.
Unicode can encode the block as precomposed 겕 or as decomposed jamo 겕. They represent the same syllable, though raw code-point comparisons can tell them apart unless software normalizes the text.
Neutral inside Korean text; alone, it reads as a fragment unless context explains it.

1Why did 겕 turn into 겕?
It is the same syllable shown in decomposed form. Unicode normalization can split a precomposed syllable into jamo or recombine them; NFC is the form that recombines them as 겕.
