What 글 means
It means writing, text, or a piece of writing.
As a standalone Korean noun, 글 refers to written material. In compounds, read the whole word: 한글 names the Korean writing system, while 글자 means a written character.
English “letter” can make 글 sound narrower than it is; the surrounding sentence decides whether “writing,” “text,” or “written work” fits.
Is 글 a word or a Hangul syllable?
It can be both a word and a syllable block.
Unicode stores 글 as one precomposed Hangul syllable, built from three jamo—the letters used to form Korean syllables: ㄱ, ㅡ, and ㄹ. A Korean 2-set input method assembles the block as you type.
How did Hangul develop?
Hangul was designed to make Korean easier to write.
King Sejong’s court created Hangul in 1443. The Hunminjeongeum, a book explaining the new letters, was completed in 1446 after refinement. Hangul offered a more accessible way to write Korean than adapting Chinese characters, as in Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal, and supported pronunciation and translation work. A proposed influence from the square Mongolian Phags-pa script remains contested; the standard account also links letter shapes to speech organs and philosophical ideas.
Hangul served religious, educational, household, and literary writing. It became the official writing system in Korea in 1894. During Japanese rule after 1910, Hangul became closely tied to Korean language and national identity.
A neutral Korean noun; the sentence around it supplies the tone.
In English, “letter” can sound too narrow: 글 usually means written material.

1Why does 글 appear as one square?
It is one Hangul syllable block built from smaller jamo. Unicode can decompose those parts for processing, while Korean text displays them together in one cell.
