hangul syllable ggim

Hangul syllable Ggim

1165/11172

낌 is a Korean syllable block, and by itself it has no usual stand-alone translation. In Korean words, it contributes to meanings such as a feeling in 느낌 and a clue or sign in 낌새. On a Korean keyboard, its parts are entered as ㄲ ㅣ ㅁ.

Text symbol

What 낌 means

Its meaning comes from the full word.

느낌 means a feeling, sense, or impression. 낌새 means a clue or sign that something is developing. In both cases, 낌 is part of a longer word; the translation belongs to the whole word, not the syllable alone.

Why is 낌 written as one block?

It combines an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant.

낌 is built from ㄲ, ㅣ, and ㅁ. Hangul arranges these parts within one block to write a syllable; the final consonant is optional, but 낌 has one.

Hangul was devised under King Sejong. Its earliest official record dates to 1443; the explanatory book Hunminjeongeum Haerye followed in 1446 and described the script’s design and purpose. These dates belong to Hangul, not to this individual syllable.

How do I type 낌?

Enter ㄲ, then ㅣ, then ㅁ with a Korean input method.

A Korean keyboard input method joins those parts into 낌. The component letters are called jamo, the building blocks used to write Hangul syllables.

Unicode can also represent the same syllable as three underlying jamo, ᄁ ᅵ ᆷ. A text inspector or normalization tool may show those pieces separately; they still make the same syllable.

As a syllable, 낌 has no fixed emotional tone; the full word and message set the tone.

낌 alone does not mean “feeling”; that meaning belongs to the whole word 느낌.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 낌 sometimes appear as separate jamo?

It is the same syllable represented by three underlying jamo instead of one precomposed block. Text shaping normally displays them as a syllable, while normalization or inspection tools may expose the components.
