Hangul Syllable Ggyok

949/11172

꾴 is a Hangul syllable, not a standalone word: its sound belongs inside a Korean word, whose surrounding syllables supply meaning. On the standard Dubeolsik keyboard, a Korean IME builds it from ShiftR, Y, and Z.

What 꾴 means

No: 꾴 is a syllable, not a word with a fixed meaning. In Korean writing it contributes one syllable sound; the surrounding word supplies the meaning. It combines the initial consonant ᄁ, vowel ᅭ, and final consonant ᆿ. The Latin spelling “ggyok” labels the syllable; it is not a translation.

Hangul was created to make Korean easier to write for people who did not know Chinese characters. Its creation is documented in 1443; a manuscript published in 1446, Hunminjeongeum, explains the script’s purpose and letter principles. Those dates belong to Hangul as a writing system, not to the origin of this individual block.

Before Hangeul became the widespread name after the Korean alphabet holiday was renamed in 1928, the script was also called Hunminjeongeum, eonmun, and gukmun. This block follows Hangul’s regular rules for joining jamo—letters that combine into a syllable block. A valid combination can be rare in ordinary words, and its components may look different in different fonts.

How do I type 꾴?

Use a Korean input method in initial–vowel–final order. With a standard Dubeolsik keyboard, switch to Korean and press ShiftR, Y, then Z for ㄲ, ㅛ, and ㅋ; the input method combines them into 꾴. Other desktop and phone layouts may assign different keys, so enter the three Korean letters in that order if the labels differ.

A font can change the components’ shape, position, or proportions without changing the syllable. If a system lacks a font that supports it, the app may show a missing-character placeholder.

Technical and specialist: it fits Korean text, Unicode tests, font checks, or language-learning examples.

Alone, it has no fixed message meaning; ask for the surrounding Korean word.

Why does 꾴 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
