What 곹 means
Press r, h, then x on a Korean two-set keyboard.
Those keys enter ㄱ, ㅗ, and ㅌ; the input method joins them into 곹. Unicode also has a form stored as separate Jamo—the letters that build Hangul syllables—which can render as the same block while remaining a different text string.
Does 곹 have a meaning on its own?
It has no fixed standalone word meaning; context supplies one.
Unicode’s name “HANGUL SYLLABLE GOT” combines the labels for ㄱ, ㅗ, and ㅌ. “GOT” describes the block’s parts; it is not a translation of the English word “got,” and it does not make 곹 a complete Korean word.
Why was Hangul created?
To make Korean speech easier to write and literacy easier to learn.
Hangul was designed for Korean speech and wider access to writing. Its earliest recorded announcement appears in a 1443 entry in the Sejong Sillok, a royal annal; the Hunminjeongeum, a book explaining the letters and syllable structure, followed in 1446.
Earlier systems such as Idu and hyangchal adapted Chinese characters to write Korean. Hangul began as a new alternative and became the principal script for Korean; 곹 belongs to that history as one built syllable.
