hangul syllable gop

Hangul Syllable Gop

251/11172

With a Korean IME using Dubeolsik, type r, h, v to form 곺. It is a valid Hangul syllable block built from three component letters; by itself, it does not give you a complete word or message. Read the surrounding Korean text for its intended sense.

What 곺 means

On a Korean IME, press r, then h, then v.

Dubeolsik is the standard two-set keyboard layout: those keys enter ㄱ, ㅗ, ㅍ, and the Korean IME joins them into 곺. Without a Korean IME active, the keys produce Latin letters; another layout may use different keys.

If the letters stay separate, check that Korean input and syllable composition are enabled.

Is 곺 a real Korean syllable or a typo?

It is a valid syllable block; a particular use may still be a typo.

The block is built from ᄀ ᅩ ᇁ: an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant. These component Korean letters are called jamo. Together, they form one syllable block; that structure does not make the block a complete word.

A 1443 record documents 28 Hangul letters, and the 1446 Hunminjeongeum manuscript explains the script. Hangul was devised to make writing Korean more accessible in a culture where Chinese characters dominated written communication. The script is commonly called Hangul in South Korea and Choseongul in North Korea; Jeongum is also used as a neutral name.

What does 곺 mean by itself?

By itself, 곺 gives you a syllable, not a complete message.

In a 2022 poem, Seoul Shinmun, a Korean newspaper, uses 배곺으다 as a deliberate misspelling of 배고프다 (“hungry”) and makes the correction part of the wordplay. It is a literary example, not a general meaning for 곺.

If someone sends it alone, ask for the surrounding Korean word or sentence before interpreting it.

Neutral as Hangul text; the surrounding word or message sets its tone.

Alone, it gives too little context to interpret a message.
