hangul syllable gum

Hangul Syllable Gum

381/11172

굼 has no fixed standalone meaning; read the full Korean word containing it. It is a typed Hangul syllable for spelling, not a reaction or picture. The system behind it was devised in the fifteenth century to ease Korean writing past Chinese characters.

What 굼 means

Nothing fixed by itself; the full word gives the meaning. In 굼뜨다, the Korean Basic Dictionary defines the whole word as moving irritatingly slowly; 굼 is one syllable there, not a synonym for slow.

Hangul itself holds the documented history, not this block. It emerged in the fifteenth century to ease Korean writing past Chinese characters, after Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters. As of 2026, sources checked establish no separate attestation or symbol tradition for 굼.

How do you type 굼?

Use a Korean IME in two-set mode. On the standard Dubeolsik layout, press r, then n, then a for ㄱ ㅜ ㅁ. The IME builds one block as you type.

Why does 굼 look different?

The font draws it; it is not emoji art. Unicode defines Hangul composition and decomposition, so one precomposed block or its jamo sequence can display differently. Separate jamo is a display issue, not a new symbol.

Fragmentary Korean text; no standalone chat tone.

Do not send 굼 alone for slow; use a full word like 굼뜨다.

1

Why does 굼 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
