What 겻 means
Ju Si-gyeong used 겻 for a category of Korean particles.
Particles are short markers attached to words to show their role in a sentence. A 1909 manuscript of Ju Si-gyeong’s 국어문법 (“Korean Grammar”) uses 겻; the book appeared in 1910. He developed native Korean grammar terms rather than relying only on imported labels.
In Ju’s system, 겻 covered 조사, while the genitive marker 의 was treated separately. Modern reference accounts preserve 겻 as his historical term.
Why does 겻 appear beside 잇 and 끗?
They name different jobs in one historical grammar system.
Ju’s nine-part scheme used 겻 for 조사, 잇 for conjunctions and connective endings that link words or clauses, and 끗 for sentence endings.
A later grammar account records Kim Du-bong using 겻 for some derivational endings, including -은 and -게. The label’s scope therefore depends on the grammar system being described.
Is 겻 a typo for 곁?
Not necessarily; the two have different uses.
곁 is the everyday noun for a nearby side or place, as in standing beside someone. 겻 belongs in a discussion of historical Korean grammar. If it appears alone in a modern chat, the surrounding context can distinguish a quotation or grammar reference from a typo.
Specialist and historical: 겻 points to Korean grammar writing or a quoted source, not casual conversation.
Use 곁 for a nearby place; 겻 is the historical grammar label.
