hangul syllable halp

Hangul Syllable Halp

10599/11172

핦 is a Hangul syllable block: Unicode’s label “halp” names its parts—ㅎ, ㅏ, and ㄿ—rather than giving a pronunciation or translation. A Korean word supplies its meaning; the final cluster’s sound depends on what follows.

What 핦 means

It is a Hangul syllable block whose meaning comes from a word.

Unicode’s label “halp” is generated from the parts: initial ㅎ, vowel ㅏ, and final ㄿ (ㄹ ㅍ). It describes the block’s construction, not a pronunciation or translation.

How do I type 핦?

Use a Korean two-set IME with Hangul input active.

Enter ㅎ, ㅏ, then ㄹ ㅍ; the IME builds the final ㄿ and composes 핦. On the standard layout the corresponding keys are G-K-F-V; English input leaves H-A-L-P as Latin letters.

Unicode can also represent this syllable as the conjoining-jamo sequence 핦, which normalization can compose into 핦. The final ㄿ is a double consonant cluster: in 읊다 (“recite”), it sounds as p before a tense t, while in 읊어 the ㄹ links to the following vowel. A display with separate jamo is a different representation of the same syllable.

Hangul was made to write Korean

Hangul was created under King Sejong to make Korean easier to write than through Chinese-character methods. Idu, Hyangchal, and Gugyeol adapted Chinese characters to record Korean; they were earlier ways to write the language, not ancestors of this block. A 1443 record reports the creation project; in 1446, Hunminjeongeum—the script’s original name and its guide—explained how consonants and vowels combine in initial, middle, and final positions.

The script’s names shifted over time: Jeongeum and Eonmun were also used; after the 1894 Gabo Reform, Gukmun and Gukseo became common; “Hangeul” appears in the early 1910s and spread later. Those are names for the writing system, not changes to 핦’s construction.
