What 흜 means
By itself, it identifies a syllable, not a whole Korean word.
Hangul assembles consonant and vowel letters into syllable blocks. 흜 decomposes to ᄒ (initial consonant), ᅳ (vowel), and ᆳ (final cluster made from ㄹ ㅅ). These parts describe its written form; they do not give it a standalone word meaning.
Why was Hangul created?
To let people write Korean in a script designed for the language.
King Sejong devised Hangul in 1443 and called it Hunminjeongeum (“the correct sounds to teach the people”). A book with the same name, published in 1446, explained its purpose and design. Before Hangul, Korean was written with Chinese characters; idu was one method of adapting those characters to record Korean. The name Hangeul began to be widely used in 1928.

Questions people ask
1Why does 흜 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
