Hangul Syllable Heult

11102/11172

Use a Korean 2-set keyboard and enter ㅎ, ㅡ, ㄹ, ㅌ without a syllable break; on QWERTY, the keys are g-m-f-x. A 1989 article from the National Institute of Korean Language records 흝다 as a Gyeongsang dialect form, corresponding to standard 핥다 (“lick”) or 훑다 (“sweep/scan”). It also says the Korean fixed set of 2,350 Hangul syllables then in use omitted dialect forms such as 흝.

What 흝 means

Type ㅎ, ㅡ, ㄹ, then ㅌ in one syllable.

With the standard Korean 2-set input method, enter ㅎ, ㅡ, ㄹ, ㅌ consecutively, without a syllable break. The input method combines the last two consonants into the final cluster ㄾ. On a QWERTY keyboard, the same keys are g-m-f-x; these letters label keys, not a romanization.

If it appears as a box, the font may not include it, or the input method may not compose that syllable. Try a Hangul-capable font or an input method that assembles Hangul blocks.

Is 흝 a typo?

No; it is a recorded regional spelling.

A 1989 National Institute of Korean Language entry records 흝다 as a Gyeongsang dialect form from southeastern Korea, corresponding to standard Korean 핥다 (“to lick”) or 훑다 (“to sweep over or scan”). Read the full word: the syllable alone cannot tell you which verb was intended.

Hangul was developed in 1443–1446 to make Korean writing usable in daily life. Its consonants and vowels combine into syllable blocks such as 흝.

The 1989 record marks 흝다 as Gyeongsang dialect; use it when reproducing that regional form.

By itself, 흝 cannot tell you whether the intended verb means “lick” or “sweep over or scan.”

Why is 흝 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
