hangul syllable holg

Hangul syllable holg

10818/11172

홁 is a Hangul syllable block, not a whole Korean word; context supplies its meaning. “holg” labels its letters. The common Korean Dubeolsik keyboard builds it from ㅎ, ㅗ and final ㄺ.

What 홁 means

It is a syllable, not a complete word. It joins initial ㅎ, vowel ㅗ, and final cluster ㄺ. Alone, it looks like a fragment; fonts may arrange the parts differently.

Hangul was created to make Korean easier to write than with Chinese characters and older systems such as Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal, which adapted characters for Korean. Its design was completed in 1443; the book Hunminjeongeum, which explained the new letters, appeared in 1446. Hangul became official in 1894, faced suppression under Japanese rule after 1910, and received renewed public support after liberation in 1945.
