What 절 means
절 is one Hangul syllable, not one fixed word.
Grammar helps: destination marking points to a temple, an object of “offer” to bowing; numbered text uses the section or verse sense.
The 1446 Hunminjeongeum Haerye, a guide to Hangul, records the temple word as Middle Korean 뎔; a 1449 Korean text, Worin cheon'gangjigok, records 절 for the bow. The section and verse sense comes from Korean words based on Chinese character 節. Hangul was created in 1443 so people unable to read Chinese characters could write Korean.

1Why does 절 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
