What 쯔 means
It has no fixed meaning by itself.
It combines consonant ᄍ (the tightly pronounced ㅉ) with vowel ᅳ (ㅡ); a Korean input method joins them into one syllable block.
Hangul was first recorded in 1443; the 1446 guide Hunminjeongeum documented its purpose and design.
Why does 쯔 appear in names?
In names, 쯔 spells a sound rather than a separate definition.
JYP's artist page spells singer Tzuyu's name 쯔위 as of 2026.
Korean guidance prescribed 쓰 for Japanese つ in 2008; a 2018 listening study found neither 쯔 nor 츠 a clean match.
