What 캊 means
It contributes one Korean syllable; a word supplies its meaning. Unicode’s romanized name is “Kaj.”
Hangul was devised to write Korean speech directly. A 1443 record calls it Hunminjeongeum; a 1446 book with that title explains the script’s purpose and design. Earlier methods such as Idu, hyangchal and gugyeol adapted Chinese characters to Korean sounds or grammar. They are earlier Korean writing practices, not ancestors of 캊. “Hangeul” became widely used by 1928.
In Unicode’s NFD (“decomposed”) form, 캊 is 캊, three Hangul letters called jamo; NFC (“composed”) joins them into one block. Fonts may shape the letters differently without changing the character’s identity.
