What 묵 means
It means unsweetened Korean starch jelly. 묵 (muk) is a cool, savory jelly made from acorn, mung-bean, or buckwheat starch, served cold with soy sauce. Plain 묵 usually means dotorimuk, acorn jelly; compounds specify 도토리묵, 녹두묵, 청포묵, or 메밀묵. Starch foods appear in 1400s–1700s records, jelly methods in 1730 and 1737 texts, and naming evidence around 1870.
Why was 묵 made?
It turned bitter crops into filling food. An early-1800s account describes mountain refugees grinding and filtering acorns, then setting the starch during famine. Mung-bean and buckwheat muk later became everyday side dishes.
Everyday as food; solemn in silence or memorial compounds.
Do not read 묵 as food in a memorial message.
