What 펕 means
Enter ㅍ, ㅓ, then ㅌ in a Korean Hangul IME.
The IME treats ㅍ as the initial consonant, ㅓ as the vowel, and ㅌ as the final consonant. These individual Hangul letters are called jamo. The IME should combine them into 펕; if they stay separate, it has not composed the syllable.
If text is stored as separate jamo, Unicode NFC normalization can combine the sequence into a precomposed syllable when that form is required.
Does 펕 have a meaning by itself?
It represents a Korean syllable, not a pictogram with a fixed meaning.
펕 is a block in the Korean writing system. It can appear within Korean text, where the surrounding word gives it a lexical role; the isolated block has no single English gloss.
Hangul was devised in 1443 as a learnable way to write Korean. Its letters represented Korean speech more directly than Chinese characters did, and could also transcribe Chinese. The 1446 Hunminjeongeum Haerye, a guide to the new script, explained how its letters combine. Hangul later became the Korean alphabet.
Why does 펕 look different in another font?
A font can change its strokes, not which character it is.
Hangul fonts vary in stroke shape and spacing. Unicode treats a precomposed Hangul syllable as one grapheme cluster, a unit that text layout keeps together, so a line break should not split 펕. A decomposed sequence may display its jamo separately; that sequence contains separate letters rather than this precomposed block.

1Why does 펕 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
