hangul syllable po

Hangul syllable po

10221/11172

포 is a Korean Hangul syllable—Hangul is the alphabet used to write Korean—with a sound roughly like po and a p released with a puff of air; alone it has no fixed translation. It appears in words such as 포도 (“grape”) and 포기하다 (“give up”), whose meanings belong to the whole word.

What 포 means

It contributes the sound po; the full word supplies the meaning.

포도 means “grape,” while 포기하다 means “give up”; sharing 포 does not make those words related.

If a message contains only 포, ask which word or phrase was intended. The syllable alone does not identify it.

Why was Hangul created?

It was designed to make Korean easier to write and learn.

Hangul was developed under King Sejong by 1443. Hunminjeongeum, a text explaining the new letters, appeared in 1446. Earlier methods such as Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal used Chinese characters to write or annotate Korean; they were writing methods, not earlier forms of Hangul.

Early Hangul books carried Buddhist and Confucian teaching and practical knowledge. In 1894, Hangul became the basis of official documents. That marks a change in the script's public role, not a change in what 포 means.

Its tone and meaning come from the Korean word and sentence around it.

Do not translate 포 alone as “grape” or “give up.”
