What 폭 means
The whole Korean word decides which sense fits.
폭이 넓다 describes physical width; 선택의 폭 means the range of choices; 열두 폭 치마 counts cloth panels in a skirt.
Hangul, the Korean alphabet, was first called Hunminjeongeum (“Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People”). It was created in 1443 to make Korean easier to write; a 1446 book of the same name explained its design. 폭 combines ㅍ, ㅗ, and ㄱ; line breaks keep the syllable block together.
