Hangul Syllable Pwals

10261/11172

퐔 is one Hangul syllable block, not a Korean word with a fixed meaning by itself. It serves as a building unit in Korean writing. Unicode’s label “PWALS” names its parts; it is not a translation. On a Korean 2-set keyboard, vhkft builds it as the input method combines the keystrokes.

What 퐔 means

It is one Korean syllable, with no fixed word meaning alone.

Hangul arranges consonant and vowel Jamo into syllable blocks: 퐔 breaks down into ᄑ (initial ㅍ), ᅪ (vowel ㅘ), and ᆳ (final cluster ㄽ). Unicode’s label “PWALS” is a mechanical name for those parts, not a translation. A Korean word and its sentence supply any lexical meaning.

Unicode also defines the block’s canonical decomposition as those three conjoining Jamo. Normalization can represent the same syllable as the precomposed block 퐔 or as its equivalent Jamo sequence.

How did Hangul become Korea’s writing system?

It was devised to make Korean speech easier to write.

Hangul was created under King Sejong. The earliest documented reference to the creation of Hunminjeongeum is a court record from 1443; an explanatory guide followed in 1446. The system offered a more direct way to write Korean speech than Hanja, Chinese characters adapted for Korean. Hangul first stood alongside Hanja, then became the everyday script for Korean. South Korea calls the script Hangul; North Korea calls it Chosŏn'gŭl.

How do I type 퐔?

On a Korean 2-set keyboard, type vhkft.

A Korean input method (IME) joins those keystrokes into a block: v enters ㅍ, h k make ㅘ from ㅗ ㅏ, and f t make final ㄽ from ㄹ ㅅ. Other layouts assign different keys.

Neutral as a text character; tone and politeness come from the Korean word and sentence containing it.

“PWALS” is Unicode’s label for the syllable, not an English definition.

1

Why does 퐔 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
