hangul syllable rwinj

Hangul syllable Rwinj

3394/11172

A Korean keyboard with Hangul input forms 륁 from an opening consonant, a vowel, and a closing consonant; on the standard South Korean Dubeolsik layout, type f-n-l-s-w. It is one Hangul syllable, not a complete message by itself; Korean words around it supply the meaning. Hangul was designed to make writing Korean more accessible than using Chinese characters.

What 륁 means

Use a Korean IME; on Dubeolsik, type f-n-l-s-w. On the standard South Korean two-set layout, switch to Korean and press those keys in order.

The input method combines the opening consonant, middle vowel, and closing consonant into one square syllable block. Other layouts may assign different keys.

Fonts can change the parts' size and placement inside the square. Those differences do not change which character it is.

What does 륁 mean by itself?

Alone, 륁 does not give you a complete message meaning. Inside a Korean word, it is one syllable; the surrounding words and sentence supply its reading and meaning.

Hangul was devised in 1443 and officially promulgated in 1446 with Hunminjeongeum, an explanatory work describing its letters and syllable blocks. Its practical aim was to make Korean easier to write than with Chinese characters, which were difficult to learn and poorly suited to Korean speech.

Chinese characters, used in Korean as Hanja, appeared alongside Hangul early on. In the late 19th century Hangul took on a stronger role in reform and administration; around 1894, it became the preferred script for government documents.

Is Hangul connected to another script?

A proposed link concerns Hangul's design, not this exact syllable.

A 2019 study proposed that Hangul's syllable theory and block arrangement may relate to the Phags-pa script, another writing system. This is a proposed historical connection in the design of Hangul, not evidence that 륁 itself was borrowed.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 륁 look different in fonts?

It can. Hangul typefaces arrange the consonant and vowel parts inside a square syllable cell, so their size and spacing may vary while the character stays the same.
