What 량 means
Alone, 량 does not identify the intended word. As a suffix, it marks amount: 작업량 (“workload”), from the Chinese character 量 (“amount”).
As of 2026, at the start of some Chinese-origin words, South Korean spelling uses 양; North Korean keeps 량: 양심/량심 (“conscience”).
King Sejong introduced Hangul in 1443 to ease Korean writing. The 1446 book Hunminjeongeum explained its design; Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters for Korean.
