Hangul Syllable Seobs

Seobs (섮) is a Hangul syllable, not a Korean word with a settled meaning by itself. Inside a Korean word, it contributes one syllable; a Korean input method composes it from four parts.

What 섮 means

Alone, 섮 is a syllable without a settled word meaning. In a Korean word, it occupies one syllable; the full spelling supplies the word's reading and meaning.

Before Hangul, Korean writing methods called Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters to write Korean. Hangul combines consonant and vowel letters, called jamo, into syllable blocks to make Korean easier to write.

The Annals of King Sejong, a royal chronicle, record Hangul's creation in 1443; Hunminjeongeum, a guide to its letters and use, followed in 1446. After Korea's liberation in 1945, North Korea ended Hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean writing) in 1949. South Korean formal writing kept Hangul–Hanja mixtures into the 1980s; Hangul-only writing became the norm through the 1990s.

How do I type 섮 with a Korean keyboard?

A Korean input method joins the jamo as you type. It combines the consonants at the end into one final cluster.

Why does 섮 show as jamo?

Unicode also defines 섮 in a decomposed form. Its component sequence is ㅅ ㅓ ㅄ. Decomposition means the same syllable expressed as its jamo; text processing may expose those parts instead of the composed block. Fonts can also style the block differently without changing its identity.

By itself it reads like a syllable sample; in Korean text, it belongs inside a word.

Without its word, readers cannot infer a complete meaning.

1

Why does 섮 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
