What 선 means
The surrounding word decides which meaning applies.
The same spelling occurs in separate Korean words: 선(善) means virtue; others describe a meeting arranged for marriage or a first public presentation. 善 is the Chinese character used to write the Korean virtue word.
Hangul syllables combine letters called jamo: 선 uses ㅅ ㅓ ㄴ. Unicode stores it either as one syllable block or as joining jamo letters; normalization can switch forms without changing the syllable. Hangul was created in 1443 to make Korean easier to learn; the 1446 book Hunminjeongeum explained its design.

Questions people ask
1Why does 선 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
