Hangul syllable sswis

On its own, 쓋 is a Korean Hangul syllable block, not a complete message with a fixed translation. It combines ㅆ ㅟ ㅆ, and a Korean word supplies its meaning. A Korean input method assembles those letters in syllable order.

What 쓋 means

By itself, 쓋 has no fixed word meaning.

This block combines ㅆ ㅟ ㅆ: an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant. The label “sswis” names the spelling; it is not a translation. A Korean word containing the syllable supplies its meaning.

Hangul was designed in 15th-century Joseon so Korean speech could be written in its own script rather than relying on Chinese characters. Its design was completed in 1443; the Hunminjeongeum, a guide introducing the script, was promulgated in 1446. During the Joseon dynasty, court women used Hangul for daily records, letters, literary works, and teaching.

How do I type 쓋 on a Korean keyboard?

Enter its consonant, vowel, and final consonant through a Korean input method.

On Dubeolsik, the standard two-set Korean keyboard layout, a Korean input method uses ShiftT for ㅆ, then ㅜ and ㅣ for ㅟ, then ShiftT again. Typing the Latin letters “sswis” on an English keyboard will not compose this block.

The same modern syllable can be stored as one precomposed block or as three decomposed Jamo, the letters that join into Hangul syllables. Text software shapes the Jamo into a block for display. Fonts may draw it differently without changing which syllable it is.

1

Why does 쓋 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
